Topic: How about EXTRAORDINARY KIDS?

Topic: Does my child need intellectual assessment?
Intelligence is composed of a variety of abilities, such as reasoning, judgment, language, mathematics, memory, creativity, abstract thinking, processing speed, and capacity to acquire knowledge, solve problem and adapt to one’s environment.  Intelligence can be a predictor of scholastic achievement, as well as adaptive and successful functioning within specific environments.

A formal intellectual assessment should be conducted by a qualified clinical psychologist or educational psychologist.  It is an integration of standardized tests, clinical interviews, behavioral observations and informal assessment procedures.  Recognized intelligence tests are norm-referenced, with high reliability and validity.  These tests are consisted of a series of different verbal and non-verbal tasks, and are administered on a one-on-one and interactive basis.

Children’s performance in an intellectual assessment could be affected by a number of factors.  Besides, there are limitations for intelligence tests.  Nevertheless, such tests are scientific, standardized and internationally recognized assessment tools, which are theoretically based, meticulously devised and have been subjected to thorough statistical analysis and continuous empirical research.

Intelligence testing gives a profile of strengths and weaknesses of one’s abilities.  This helps parents and teachers to throw light on educational plan for a child.  Intellectual assessment also serves to identify special needs children for referral to appropriate schools and remedial services.  Moreover, intelligence tests can measure effects of special programs, training and intervention.  They could be applied periodically to assess developmental progress of an individual child too.

Topic: Raising your multi-exceptional child
Gifted children may have hidden learning disabilities.

Being gifted is exceptional. Gifted children with other kinds of exceptionality like Attention Deficient, Dyslexia, Hyper-activity, Autism / Asperser, Sensory Integration problems are described as multi-exceptional.

Approximately one-sixth of the gifted children have some types of learning disability. Their higher abilities enable them to develop compensatory strategies to manage their weaknesses. It will hide their learning difficulties.  The effects of a learning disability can suppress a child’s giftedness and the child’s giftedness can mask his or her learning challenge and become harder to detect. Their inconsistent academic performance may lead parents and teachers to misunderstand them as not putting forth adequate effort. In addition, compensation requires more energy and may not guarantee success. The frustrating experiences, turn out, may affect motivation.

Tailored made accommodations, designed based on individual’s strength and weaknesses, enable multi-exceptional children to learn in ways that best suited them. Therefore, they still can be happy and promising children if we can develop and help them according to their strength, interest and weaknesses.

Topic: An all-rounded development in IQ, EQ and CQ
The presentation will talk about what IQ is, its importance and how it affects the development of children. Intelligence is an umbrella term describing a property of the mind including related abilities, such as the capacities for abstract thought, understanding, communication, reasoning, learning, learning from past experiences, planning, and problem solving. Other than IQ, emotions play an important role in child development. EQ is about the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of one's self, of others, and of groups. By having high EQ, children will be able to understand and manipulate emotions. Other than IQ and EQ, creativity is another aspect of child development. With high creativity, children will be able to generate alternatives when solving problems. And thus, they can become more successful in the future. By understanding IQ, EQ and CQ, we can help children to acquire a better development.

Ms Lili S L Tsang
Founder of Hong Kong Moral & Character Education Centre for Children;
Principal of Danse À Lili Ballet Académie; L.R.A.D., A.I.S.T.D.

Ms Lili Tsang began learning ballet with the renowned ballet master and educator, Mrs. Joan Campbell, at the tender age of five.  She went to the UK in 1986 to further her studies in ballet and obtained the Licentiate of Royal Academy of Dancing L.R.A.D. and other professional qualifications.  After graduation she began teaching at Baber Miki Ballet Academy in Japan and then returned to Hong Kong to run her own dance academies.

Besides giving lessons in ballet, Lili also likes to share with parents her own experience in building relationships with children.  She believes that the family has a great influence on a child’s moral character, mental and physical development.  Seeing that nowadays society often reprimands and criticizes the conduct of children and teenagers, Lili endeavours to contribute to the promotion of children’s character and moral education.

In April 2009, Lili co-founded the Hong Kong Children’s Character Education Resource Centre (the Centre) with EQ training specialist, Mr. Charles Yu, in an attempt to arouse the attention of parents, teachers and the public on the importance of promoting children’s character and moral education so as to help forge a positive attitude towards life among the next generation.

Lili believes that “love” is the most essential element in educating children and the most powerful factor in stabilizing a family.  Since parents are the most important and the earliest teachers of their children, through appropriate physical contact and positive words they can impart correct messages of love to their children.  The Centre is a voluntary organization offering relevant reading materials, workshops and seminars to parents and their children to help them realize a harmonious family relationship in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
